Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort celebrated the grand reopening of Kani Ka Pila Grille over the weekend.
The full-service poolside restaurant, which first opened in 2008, has been expanded to include more outdoor seating and a new stage area. The updates are part of the resort’s ongoing $80 million renovation project, which is led by architecture and design firm Hart Howerton.
“It was a great venue, but we were so excited to upgrade the stage as part of the massive transformation of the Outrigger Reef,” said Sean Dee, executive vice president, and chief commercial officer at Outrigger Hospitality Group, in a video release. “We are nearly finished, but today we get to dedicate and bless this great stage and bring even more talented Hawaii musicians back to work.”
Over the years, Kani Ka Pila has garnered a reputation for its emphasis on live Hawaiian music, and local musicians including the late slack-key guitarist and singer Cyril Pahinui — who’s credited with naming the restaurant — have performed at the venue.
A number of well-known Hawaii musicians were in attendance at the grand reopening event Saturday, including Amy Hanaialii and Henry Kapono. Sean Naauao, Kawika Kahiapo and Hookena also performed at the event.
