Travel & Research Fellowship
In 2006, Hart Howerton began an educational initiative to fund a select number of Fellowship positions for students at design schools. For two decades, the Hart Howerton Fellowship has offered annual summer internships and travel funding for research on a selected fellowship topics. Fellows will graduate with experience in a collaborative professional interdisciplinary design office and worldwide travel and research. The Hart Howerton Fellowship underscores the firm’s longstanding commitment to providing professional and educational opportunities for young professionals with the energy and enthusiasm who are the foundation for the next generation of design thinking.
Named by Architectural Digest as “one of the fellowship programs paving the way for the future of architecture,” the Hart Howerton Fellowship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design entering their final year of study. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue a research topic of their choice while interning at either Hart Howerton’s New York or San Francisco office.
Students will select one of the firm’s two research initiatives for their proposed research topic and travel location. Complete Environments: New and innovative thinking that spans the fields of planning, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. Healthy Living: Comprehensive design for improved health outcomes in the places we create. Students with similar interests are encouraged to apply.
The annual call for applications is now open and closes on January 19th, 2027. Winners are announced in the spring and commence their internship and travel research in the early summer. The fellow will have a roughly 8-week professional intern “assignment” working on an existing firm project, and an on average 3-week travel/research period. The research findings will be prepared as a report presented by the Fellow to the firm.
