In a state that has become a hotspot for new golf development, the next major project taking shape in South Carolina stands out for a simple reason beyond its unique name: it’ll be open to public play.

Candyroot Lodge plans to have four 18-hole courses and a lighted short course across about 1,200 acres of rolling sandhills roughly an hour from both Charlotte, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina, offering a “thoughtful and welcoming” experience that embraces walking, wellness and modern minimalist golf architecture.
Most notably, Candyroot is a public golf resort retreat amid a landscape in which every other golf course being built in South Carolina is private — at places such as 21 Golf Club, Kawonu, Orange Hill, New Holland and Cypress Shoals. The state’s recent wave of highly regarded openings has similarly skewed private, from Anson Point in Palmetto Bluff to Old Sawmill, Old Barnwell, Broomsedge and The Tree Farm.
The property, master planned by Hart Howerton, will eventually include lodging that has a “sense of place” and restorative wellness amenities – from hot-cold therapy including saunas and steam rooms to strength training facilities and miles of trails. Construction on that infrastructure could begin in 2027.
